Trixie Belle At 15 Weeks

I may have more formal photos later this week, but for now, going with crazy, sleeping puppy.

It takes a lot of energy to grow a puppy to Great Dane size, so there is a lot of sleeping going on…and poor Scout is her favorite pillow.

Every time I come into the living room, she’s found a different way to sleep on her sister.

Occasionally she uses a real pillow, but still needs Scout close by. She’s very attached to Scout and I’m actually working on giving her some more confidence separate from Scout. Starting with her vet visit and shopping excursions, where she can ride in the basket and get lots of attention from strangers.

She does enjoy her walks around the block with just me. Scout enjoys her much longer walk alone with me, too. Gives her a chance to have one-on-one attention.

Trixie Diaries: 12 Weeks And Full Of Sweetness

Official 12 week portrait

I’m not sure what I did to get such a good puppy. She’s sweet as can be and with exception of a few puppy issues – face nipping, duck chasing and potty training – she’s been a dream.  And so smart – the face nipping stopped after letting her know it was unacceptable – and the other two she makes great progress each time I intervene. She’s really been potty trained since the first week, but in the evenings, we are getting a few accidents. It could be overtired, I’m missing cues, or just not wanting to go out in the dark.

I think once I get her to understand ringing the bell on the doors, that issue will resolve pretty quickly.

She always looks so serious in photos – I think it’s the black-rimmed eyes. She’s really not that serious. Mostly she’s bouncing around like Tigger, looking for someone to play with her.

She has decided that she must go to bed when Scout goes to bed*, which works out great for me. Some peace and quiet while I wind down my evening.

I’ll try and get a photo of her in her little sweater that she wears on the super cold mornings. We thought when we bought it earlier in the month she wouldn’t be wearing it until January-ish – but she outgrew her (and Scout’s) cute hoodie over the holiday and now in her new one. No worries, $2 at the thrift store. Toddler size 3, LOL

*Scout has a strict 10 pm bedtime that she slowly adapted to my schedule after Bixby died – staying up with me until very late, giving me the eye and heavy sighs as the night dragged on. Now that Trixie is here, she feels comfortable going to bed at her regular time.

Trixie Belle At 9 Weeks

The level of cuteness in my house is off the charts:

Making great progress in their relationship

8-week sweater (Scout hand-me-down)

She outgrew the other sweater in the first week – this one was Scout’s at 12-14 weeks, and was roomy on her. I think Trixie will be out of this one in a week to 10 days.  Since she only wears it on extremely cold days outside, I usually go to the thrift store and shop in the toddler section for puppy needs.

Santa hat was met with a lack of enthusiasm.

Regardless, she was adorable

Morning Walks: Mountain River

Scout and I continue our morning adventures. The weather has been beautifully cool and crisp in the mornings. But the water was still comfortable enough to dip my toes in for a bit.

Scout is doing great. I was hoping these walks, far from our usual routine, would take my mind off Bixby. Walking through the neighborhood, everyone always makes an effort to say hello and often comment on how much they miss Bixby. Me, too.

So, we needed to get away. And away helps me notice things about Scout as we work together. She relied heavily on Bixby as her guide in the world and she’s actually struggling to find her way without him. These explorations have been good for us, I can see where she needs more confidence and also where she needs a bit more training. She followed Bixby’s lead in most things, which worked well for us, he loved having a groupie and she was just a breeze to train because of it. But now we have to find our footing without him.

She’s outgoing on walks, not afraid of much, but can be timid with new routines or new experiences, like walking in the river. It takes her a bit to work up her courage, but she gets there. We get there. Before we know it, she’ll be alpha dog. Leading the way, bowing down only to her kittehs, whom she adores.

She’s still not playing at home – no tug, no fetch, a few zoomies. But she loves going on drives and is happy to snuggle on the couch. And she is ridiculously happy when the neighborhood kids come to visit and when she’s allowed to go out the front door, unleashed, to greet people, trusted to come back when she’s called. She knows it’s a big deal to earn that trust and it gives her hyper tail wags.
