Spring Surprises

Forsythia in full bloom

Seven years. Seven years is how long it took me to get this forsythia to look like this. When I first bought the house, I didn’t even realize it was a forsythia. It was severely overgrown and the first spring had very few if any blooms on it.

And yesterday, a complete surprise as the day warmed.

Flowers everywhere.

Seven years of cutting it back, including one year where I took it all the way back to the ground, thinking I would just remove it. A gas line made those plans complicated, so I left it with the idea I’d just cut it back each year so it wouldn’t be unsightly, even if it had scant blooms each spring.

This year it rewarded me with a full branches full of blooms. It was a pleasant surprise.

For those who remember, this was also the bush where I found the injured Chameleon during one of those trimming sessions. She was subsequently rehabilitated by a great reptile organization and adopted.
