Earwigs for Breakfast

Nora the white duck standing in her water bowl

I know. Eeewww. But earwigs are the bane of my gardening existence. They eat more of my young vegetable plants than any other pest.

Ducks love earwigs, unfortunately they are nocturnal and ducks, my ducks at least, must be in the coop overnight. Toads would work, but I would have to kidnap them from my brother’s environment. And I’m not sure I could provide the proper environment for them here.

By chance I found a small solution. I give Nora watermelon pieces in a bowl of water as a treat. The other night I left the water out overnight, sweet water with a bit of leftover watermelon.

Next morning…filled with earwigs. Guess what Nora loves more than anything? Yup, fresh earwigs for breakfast. She’s a very happy duck.

What's to say? I love to cook and I think families benefit from sitting down together for dinner every night.
