I have been food cube curious for a while, but wasn’t sure I’d have much use for them. That was until a fitness/food vlogger talked about “meal Tetris.” This is the idea of storing just one food item in each tray and then creating meals by mixing and matching the ingredients.
With that idea in mind, the idea of using the food cubes made much more sense to me. Grab a protein, grab a carb, grab a veggie and there’s your meal. Heat and serve.
Instead of having to plan meals to freeze, I just had to think in terms of ingredients. Then I could create what I wanted, when I wanted it. And for me, it’s easier to make a large pot of one ingredient one day and another ingredient another day. More efficient with my schedule and definitely easier clean up then if I prepped entire meals.
Beans and rice are a no-brainer. I also have mashed potatoes, shredded chicken, and ground beef, Leftover pasta and sauces, stored separately. Which means I can reheat at different times/temps so the pasta stays al dente.
There are also several soups. Which is nice in the summer, I can make a batch and pull out a cube or two on a rainy day.
Cubes come in one and two cup sizes. I have one 2-cup/2 section tray and the remainder are 1-cup/4 section trays. This works well for me.
Have you tried meal cubes? How have they worked for you? Do you just store leftovers?
