Underway Update and Big Reveal

Update 11/15/19 – the manuscript is about ready to go to the editor. And I have a surprise! The draft of the Underway Cover. I’m loving it. What do you think?

Previous update:

I wanted to give you an update on Underway. As is obvious now, my projected publishing date has come and gone. I’ve now revised it for (hopefully) a December release. The reasons why are two-fold.

One, life got in the way and derailed my desire to write. And in some ways even my ability to write. I addressed that with my Anger Journal, and my creativity appears to be back on track.

The more important reason, though, was I got lost halfway through book two, mired in structure instead of remembering why I was writing. I forgot that I love TJ Wilde. I love telling her story. I love her quirkiness, her flaws, her inability to commit, her damaged soul, and mostly her fight to stay positive and moving toward what she wants.

In other words, I lost her voice. And I love her voice.

My first editor really, really did not like TJ, felt she was too dysfunctional, too morally challenged. She tried several times to sterilize her. I was a brick wall on that point. We agreed to disagree and instead focused on the structure and timing of the novel.

My current editor loves TJ as much as I do. Appreciates her tang, her spark, her weaknesses, and I suspect we will tangle more on pacing and structure than we will on characters.

Anyway, I’ve taken a long break, finished my cookbook, and dabbled with my other series. Most importantly, I indulged in the female characters that reminded me of how I like my heroes: the inept, yet fearless bounty hunter with a love of big hair and bigger eyelashes; the filled with anger and teenage hormones private eye; the “rules are for adults” preteen with a penchant for uncovering mysteries; the overall-wearing six-year-old with impulse control issues; the vampire slayer, also awash in teenage hormones and resentment; and yes, I suppose even a cowardly, clumsy talking Great Dane.

So now, refreshed, I now feel ready to tackle (with a lot of rewriting) Underway again.

I’m hoping to have a least a rough draft of Chapter One to share soon.

Stay tuned…

Cuba: A Love Story

I am still trying to process Cuba and Havana. But I will tell you I left a bit of my heart there. It began with a snafu with our room reservations that showed us the heart of the people of Cuba. We were without a place to stay for all of ten minutes.  And our new hosts not only found room for us but made us feel like family before the day was out. Casa de Sergio y Miriam was only the beginning.

To a person, every Cuban we encountered was kind, helpful and full of joy. We were never lost for long or without a suggestion for something new to see. Someone always stepped in to help. And along the way shared their story with us.

And so many places to see. We spent our first day exploring the neighborhoods around our apartment. People watching as everyone went about their day in the narrow, colorful streets. I believe one of the reasons we met so many wonderful people was because we wandered the streets away from the tourist areas.

Havana is the perfect illustration of the idiom, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” because behind the aging facades were beautiful apartments, restaurants and shops. Hurricanes, age and economic downturns have taken their toll on these beautiful buildings, but the intelligence, ingenuity and hard work of the people of Havana have kept them, not only functional, but warm and inviting on the inside.

And even those that are completely abandoned hold their own fascination and tell a story, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of city life.

I traveled to Havana for research and by the second day had found most of what I had in my mind for locales. Art is everywhere, galleries are everywhere, both traditional and decidedly abstract and I filled my camera and notebook with examples.

This guy was ubiquitous

Once I felt I had what I needed, then I relaxed and soaked in Havana and all its charm.

There was the food:

Of course, the coffee.  Loved this presentation with coffee beans and sugar cane.

I found myself eating mostly vegetarian meals because everything was so fresh and tasted amazing.

VanVan’s was one of my favorite places – and had the best lemon pie ever, not to mention the great musical decor.

And speaking of music, it was everywhere. In the streets, on the buses (which we mastered), in the restaurants, on the plazas. It became the soundtrack of our days.

And then there was the architecture:

Plaza  Vieja is one of the tourist hangouts. It is almost completely restored, colorful and bustling with people from all over the world. We would hang out there at the end of our days, soaking it all in.  We walked miles each day exploring the rest of the city.

We took a double-decker bus one morning to explore areas outside Central and old Havana. We toyed with taking an old car, but opted for the open air bus instead. Riding in one of the 1950 cars was on my list, but our days were so filled, we were never able to fit it in.

We did find time to spend a day at the beach. Baby soft sand, clear blue-green water and palm trees. It was also fun to take the bus there, see the sights outside the city.

There is still so much to absorb from our trip. More story to tell and hopefully, I can do it justice in Underway. A special week for sure. And it is the people who I will carry with me. Kind, intelligent, hardworking and proud. And I feel like I have family there that I would happily return to visit.

Cuba Adventures

I haven’t even begun to download my photos yet – or unpack the memories of this amazing trip. So I’m stealing this photo from my traveling companion as a placeholder. I have tons of ideas for the book and I’ll write a blog post on our adventures as soon as I finish laundry, snuggle with the critters and a get caught up on work. Definitely left a little of my  in Cuba. Stay tuned…

Reviews and Prizes

Underway – expected June 2019
TJ arrives in Boston and is quickly involved in a missing persons/art theft mystery

A writer friend of mine shared some good information today and I wanted to share it here:

… if you read something and enjoy it, you give the author a big gift by reviewing the book on Amazon and/or Goodreads. The review can be very short (I enjoyed this book). It doesn’t have to 5 star. The issue is that Amazon uses the sheer number of reviews as part of its algorithm for which books to promote. Also some sites…require that a book have a certain number of reviews before you can promote on there.

I could use a few more reviews. Because, while I’ve heard from many of you (and even signed your books!) there are not many reviews on Amazon right now. And I know it can be a pain and you don’t know what to say, etc. I get it.

So, I’m going to offer a little incentive! Between now and January 31, 2019, anyone who leaves a review will be entered into a contest for the newest volume in the TJ Wilde Mysteries Trilogy – Underway. I will pick two winners at random (regardless of stars!). The winners will receive a signed copy of Underway.

And just to make things fair and equal – if you leave a comment here or on my Facebook page, under this post, between now and January 31, 2019 – you’ll be entered, too. And I’ll award a signed copy of your choice, Run Aground or Underway. Heck, you can even choose the first book in my Jennifer McCaffrey mystery series. More on that to come…

Now I have to get back to writing, or there won’t be any new books. I will try to post a new Instagram Short Story this weekend. It may be a little (real life) mystery, itself.

Oh, and that author, Dorothy A. Winsor, you can find her terrific YA books here.

UNDERWAY Soundtrack: Body Like A Back Road

I work to find songs that convey where I’m trying to go with the characters. It’s not really their music, more music to get me in the space I need to be. This week I’ve been bouncing between some darker blues for the mystery aspect and the more romantic moments. Today, it was romance. I’ve been trying to solidify the romance angles.
